Hello, I am the kind of Baldur's Gate 3 player who spends forty minutes sculpting a heroic jawline and then makes terrible choices for science. So when I heard that Alfira — the sweet, doomed tiefling bard — could be recruited as a permanent companion, I did what any reasonable person would do: I opened a save file, ignored every warning label, and prepared to break the game. As of 2026, the official answer is still that Alfira is not a normal companion. Larian's Patch 7 notes clarified that her brief join was always meant to be temporary, a Dark Urge story beat rather than a secret fourth party slot. But players being players, an exploit exists. It is unofficially possible to keep Alfira around permanently. It is also, and I cannot stress this enough, a spectacularly bad idea.

Spoiler warning: this is your last chance to look away if you care about Dark Urge surprises in Acts One and Two.

The exploit starts simply enough. You must play as the Dark Urge, because Alfira only joins temporarily on that path. You reach the Emerald Grove, meet the tieflings, and return to camp. At night, Alfira shows up and officially joins the party — but only if there is enough room. That tiny condition is where my sensible playthrough died. From there, you need another party member, preferably Alfira herself because irony is a free action, to kill the Dark Urge player character. Then you strip the Durge's gear so they are as light as possible, use an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength on Alfira, have her pick up the Durge, and stuff the body into her inventory. The game then cuts to the Mountain Pass. Congratulations: you have technically recruited Alfira, and also technically murdered your own protagonist.

This is where the guide becomes a survival horror game. You must progress through the main quest without ever long resting or leaving the Mountain Pass until well after you arrive at the Last Light Inn. Put Alfira on her usual chair in the inn, speak to her with another character to get the Rescue the tieflings quest, then let her stand up and continue until that quest is complete. Next, do the unthinkable and kill Alfira. Yes, again. Her backup NPC, Quill Grootslang, will arrive, and you need to kill her too. Then you long rest until Sceleritas Fel appears and gives you the Deathstalker Mantle. If everything worked, Alfira should be a permanent party member, and Withers should be able to resurrect her.

At this point, experienced players have already noticed the flaming red flags. I certainly did, right after I stopped laughing and started crying into my keyboard.

Catch What it actually costs you
You kill the Dark Urge permanently No player character for the whole game; only prefabricated Origin characters
The dead Durge occupies a slot Party limit becomes three instead of four
You skip most of Act One Grove and tiefling content becomes unavailable
No long rest or leaving Mountain Pass until deep into Act Two You skip the Underdark and drag the party through a consumable nightmare
It depends on glitches Any future patch can turn your bard into a very elaborate error message

Recruiting Alfira also requires skipping the grand majority of Act One. Anything after her camp arrival becomes unavailable, because if you progress normally she gets killed by the Dark Urge. You can delay her debut by exploring the Act One map without entering the Grove, but you still cannot complete much of the tiefling camp content. Once the exploit teleports you to the Mountain Pass, you cannot leave or long rest again until well into Act Two. That means skipping the entire Underdark, surviving without a single long rest, and relying on tons of health potions, food, and raw Strength or Dexterity attackers instead of characters who need spell slots or Ki Points. The bard's Song of Rest helps once, which is like bringing one umbrella to a hurricane.

By the time you finish, you are almost done with Act Two, probably severely underleveled, and you have missed some of the best parts of the story. And the biggest catch is that the whole strategy relies on a chain of glitches that will likely be patched out. In 2026, I would not trust a save file held together by an Elixir of Hill Giant Strength and hope.

If you simply want Alfira in your party without turning your campaign into a cautionary tale, use mods. Alfira Joins the Party by adriant1978 is a reliable option, and equivalent mods through Baldur's Gate 3's built-in mod manager also do the trick. That is the sane route. Alfira is a well-loved companion, and I understand the urge to move heaven or Toril to recruit her. But this exploit is not a romance; it is a hostage situation with dice. My advice? Install a mod, keep your protagonist alive, and let the bard sing without turning your party into a three-person tragedy. 🎵
